Yes, A line-level design did exist previously, but my desire to “amplify the magnet’s force” eventually pushed it toward a page-level implementation.
In practice, the “magnet” invariably captures the label closest to it — namely, the one with the minimal character distance. A practical strategy, therefore, is to position the cursor just slightly ahead of the label you intend to attract, since label always resides at the head of a structure.
Indeed, the label picker remains the most effective option for now, at least until an label/everything autocomplete API — something akin to LaTeX — becomes available.
