Who’s using federation sync?

I’m on the hunt for features to remove for the sake of simplicity. There’s an obscure feature part of Federation that allows to “sync in” content from a federation compatible server to your local space using the federation attribute in SETTINGS.

If you’re like “whut!?” this doesn’t concern you. But perhaps there’s some people out there that discovered this feature and using it. At some point I was contemplating of leveraging for keeping Libraries up to date and there is a chance people adopted it.

Anybody?

TL;DR: I would a lot if it could access instances that need password. Read-only is fine

I keep a few links to silverbullet.md for now. I was trying to access files from another instance running on the same server using a subfolder (links break, would need this prefix), or symlinks in file system (didn’t work but I’m not good with these)

My use case is that I use my instance a lot, but want to link to some pages in the family instance, which cannot be fully public.

I personally like the idea of transcluding a Library, but I think that would be an unattended automatic update, so kinda remote code execution, so kinda not good for the self-hosting, security and privacy oriented userbase :person_shrugging:

I’m not sure I completely follow. But to clarify: I wouldn’t remove federation links, just the feature where you can synchronize a bunch of federated pages into your space.

As to libraries, security wise there is no difference and updating, like updating plugs, will remain an explicit command to run. You have to trust your library source as well as your plug sources or bad things could happen.

The feature is indeed obscure for me, I misunderstood the first post

Thanks for the reply, both of my concerns are explained away

I too thought I use this, but I think I only use federated links the same way @Maarrk mentioned.

The only use-case I have for actually syncing remote pages (not just transclusion/embedding them) would be for libraries/plugs, which I guess is separate?

Yes, that’s separate

I removed this since (quiet deprecation), but this is the page that describes what I’m talking about (“Federating” section):

I didn’t want to answer because you didn’t ask who doesn’t use it.
But just in case… I don’t

Ok, I think that covers about all people who MIGHT have adopted this.

Ok. This feature has since been quietly removed from Edge
